What I packed & everything you DON'T need

Packing for college is truly one of the most stressful parts about going to college. When I first began packing I felt like I needed everything. And I mean everything. Over-packing was an understatement. I brought almost every single piece of clothing I owned. Every cleaning product I could get my hands on. Every pink fluffy pillow I found in every single home decor store. Every cute matching folder and notebook set. Every colorful pen. You name it, I had it. It was absolute chaos to say the least. But I will be the first person to tell you that you don’t need over half the shit everyone tells you that you have to have. And do not buy everything beforehand, they have stores near your college I promise. (well unless you go to a weird school with no life or people or homes around it, but I go to school in New Jersey) So, if you know that there is any type of store near you or any way to have things shipped to your dorm/house, then trust me when I say, you can buy so many things you will need AFTER you move in.

Some of things that you will absolutely need for the first day you move in include:

  • Cleaning supplies: for when you first move in and want to clean before moving all of your new stuff into the room. And those dorm rooms are so gross and totally not cleaned.

  • Anything that goes on your bed: well you need to sleep on something right? And I know for a fact your mom is going to want to take pictures of you on your new bed for her Facebook page.

  • All chargers, electronics, and power strips: having your parents or roommate help you designate spots to plug in all of your chargers, lamps, clocks, and other electronics is going to be a lot more helpful than you think it will be.

  • Any toiletries and shower necessities: You are going to want and need all of your toiletries and shower necessities not only to use them but to also begin organizing them.

  • Clothes & shoes: Again, not only are you going to want and need your clothes and shoes for wearing, but you’re going to need them in order to start organizing.

Some things you do not need!!!

  • Extra furniture: unless it is absolutely necessary or you have the space

  • Too much clothing: you only can fit so much, don't bring too much

  • Space heaters: you will be hot, don't do it.

  • Too many shoes: you only need a few pairs. I promise you don't need that many.

  • Kitchen appliances: Unless you are a chef, you will not be cooking.

  • Large suitcase: where do you plan on putting that?

If there are any things you are bringing to move into your dorm, apartment, or house that you know you are not going to need on the very first day or few days of moving in, then do not bring it! Don’t stress yourself out with having so many things to unpack and organize on the first day if not absolutely necessary.

Good luck to you all!!!
