If you're a freshman starting in college or if you're a college student trying to find their way, this is for you.
Here are some things that are so important to remember:
NEVER drink too much or get more drunk: This applies especially to when you are at a frat party or a bar. Getting drunk in a safe space is always ok, but drinking too much in a place you don't know too well can be very dangerous and can also lead to embarrassment. Trust me, and save yourself.
Be unapologetically yourself: ALWAYS be yourself and let no one change that or judge you for being your true and fullest self. These are the best years of your life. Be yourself because if you have to pretend to be someone else, you will not be able to enjoy it.
Go out of your comfort zone (especially the first few months): The absolute best way to get yourself out there and make friends is to get yourself out of your comfort zone. If you are shy, like me, step out of the box, be confident, be yourself, be kind, and take those risks. It can be scary to make new friends and meet new people, but it is so worth the risks,
Accept that you will have bad days: you are going to have bad days, stressful days, hard days, and that is more than ok. Take time to yourself, take time to relax, and put yourself first. It's ok to take time for yourself and take a break.
You do not have to be best friends with your roommate: many people get the whole roommate thing very wrong. Trust me, I would know, because I got it wrong, at first. My first roommate and I did not work out, and that's ok, we worked better as friends and not roommates, and there is nothing wrong with that. Another thing people often get wrong when it comes to roommates is that you need to be best friends, and you don’t. It will probably be better if you're not best friends.
Fan, shower shoes, earbuds, or airpods: nothing else needs to be said.
Walk around campus before the first day of class: getting to know where you're going, finding your way around, and locating your classes will make your first day of classes much easier and help your first day to go a little smoother.
Do your laundry during the week: the last thing you are going to want to do over the weekend is your laundry.
Don't give into peer pressure: many people, especially college students, give into peer pressure a little too easily. One thing I am proud to say is that I have NEVER given into peer-pressure. But if you do, that is fine, but do not live with regrets. Never let your past actions continue to affect your present and future actions, and feelings, because it will eat you up.
Never forget your keys (especially on a night out): the absolute last thing you will want to do after a night out of drinking and partying is have to go to your RA or security guard and have them let you in your room. NOT FUN!!
Grades are not everything: as long as you are working hard and dedicating a good amount of time to class and studying, that's all you can do.
Find a balance between fun and work: THISS i cannot stress this enough.
Use campus facilities: every college offers so many amazing things to their students, take advantage of that.
Call your family: it's not embarrassing or weird to stay in contact with your family or miss your family. It's a normal and great thing.
If you are not a morning person, don't schedule early classes: you can thank me later. It's so not worth it
Have fun & enjoy every moment
